Microsoft, Adobe Collaborate Against Online Threats

July 29th, 2010

Microsoft, Adobe Collaborate to Protect Against Online Threats(The Hosting News) – Today at the Black Hat USA 2010 conference, Microsoft Corp. announced that it will extend its Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to include vulnerability information sharing from Adobe Systems Inc. Microsoft also discussed the new policy of coordinated vulnerability disclosure — a reframing of responsible disclosure — and introduced new tools and guidance that will improve online security for customers.

Extending Microsoft Active Protections Program in Collaboration With Adobe Systems

Launched in October 2008 by the Microsoft Security Response Center, MAPP is a unique collaborative effort that facilitates advanced information sharing on Microsoft product vulnerabilities with security software providers. In fall 2010, Adobe will join Microsoft and share its vulnerability information with the 65 global MAPP members, offering advanced protections to hundreds of millions of people. Through programs like MAPP, Microsoft is helping protect customers from the threats of today and tomorrow.

“Adobe products are relied on by individuals and organizations worldwide. Given the relative ubiquity and cross-platform reach of many of our products, as well as the continued shifts in the threat landscape, Adobe has attracted increasing attention from attackers,” said Brad Arkin, senior director of product security and privacy at Adobe. “We are committed to our customers’ security at every level and are excited to leverage MAPP as an important part of our overall product security initiative. MAPP is a great example of a tried and proven model giving an upper hand to a network of global defenders who all rally behind a shared purpose — protecting our mutual customers.”

“Microsoft acknowledges that the constantly changing threat landscape requires a new approach to security — collaboration and shared responsibility are key as past individual efforts are no longer enough,” said Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center at Microsoft. “We’re excited about extending the benefits of MAPP to Adobe users as we’ve seen clear evidence of its impact in advancing customer protections. We continue to encourage the collective industry — from security researchers and vendors to customers— to recognize the responsibility we all share in fortifying the broader computing ecosystem against online crime.”

Shift to Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure

In recognition of the endless debate between responsible disclosure and full disclosure proponents and the debate’s ability to detract from productive industry collaboration and customer defense, Microsoft announced it will move to a new practice and philosophy of coordinated vulnerability disclosure.

Definition of coordinated vulnerability disclosure. Microsoft believes coordinated vulnerability disclosure is when newly discovered vulnerabilities in hardware, software and services are disclosed directly to the vendors of the affected product, to a CERT-CC or other coordinator who will report to the vendor privately, or to a private service that will likewise report to the vendor privately. The finder allows the vendor an opportunity to diagnose and offer fully tested updates, workarounds or other corrective measures before detailed vulnerability or exploit information is shared publicly. If attacks are underway in the wild, earlier public vulnerability details disclosure can occur with both the finder and vendor working together as closely as possible to provide consistent messaging and guidance to customers to protect themselves.

Additional details on coordinated vulnerability disclosure can be found at http://blogs.technet.com/b/ecostrat/archive/2010/07/22/coordinated-vulnerability-disclosure-bringing-balance-to-the-force.aspx.

Microsoft calls on the broader community — from security researchers to vendors — to move to coordinated vulnerability disclosure. The need for coordination and shared responsibility has never been greater, as the computing ecosystem faces an unprecedented level of threat from the criminal element. To overcome that element, we must work together to improve the security of the entire ecosystem — and, as always, making customer protection our highest priority.

New Tools and Guidance

Microsoft also today released several resources that will help customers make informed decisions and manage risk. These releases demonstrate the company’s ongoing efforts to improve customer experience by developing and sharing guidance and solutions. Microsoft urges organizations to leverage this freely available guidance to protect against threats and improve their security processes.

Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET). EMET is a free tool that brings newer security mitigations to older Microsoft platforms and applications, both third-party and line of business applications. The tool specifically helps block targeted attacks against unfixed vulnerabilities. The tool will be available in August. Those interested can visit http://ecn.channel9.msdn.com/o9/edge/9900/29900/emetoverview72010_edge.wmv to watch an instructional video.

Microsoft vulnerability research (MSVR) paper. The MSVR was launched to share the lessons Microsoft has learned about building more secure software and responding to vulnerabilities in third-party products built on the company’s platform. Since its launch in 2008, the MSVR has worked with more than 30 vendors, helping improve both Microsoft’s software, as well as third-party products, ultimately keeping more people safe online. A more detailed account on how the MSVR has improved the overall security of Microsoft and third-party products can be downloaded at http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9738193.

A Report: Building a Safer, More Trusted Internet Through Information Sharing. In August 2008, Microsoft launched three security-related programs designed to collectively share more information with partners and customers. As outlined in this report, the three programs — MAPP, the Microsoft Exploitability Index and the MSVR — have evolved over the past two years, creating a safer online environment for people around the world. For example:
Sourcefire Inc. reported that in the race between exploit and protection, MAPP has helped to reduce the risk of attack in some cases by more than 75 percent.

According to iDefense Labs, the Microsoft Exploitability Index has helped reduce risk by providing system administrators with the information they need to prioritize security updates.

Since 2009, the MSVR program has identified 35 different software vulnerabilities affecting a total of 19 vendors. To date, 45 percent of those vulnerabilities have been resolved, helping better secure Microsoft’s platform and the larger computing environment.

The full report on the progress of these three programs can be viewed at http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9738546.

Given the increasing criminality of the threat landscape, it’s clear that a new approach to security is required. Microsoft encourages a shared sense of responsibility across the ecosystem as no one company, individual or technology can solve today’s complex security challenges. As such, Microsoft calls on the industry to continue to collaborate and coordinate to combat online threats and create a safer, more trusted Internet.

Microsoft Launches Beta Version of WebMatrix

July 7th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – Microsoft has now launched beta testing of its free development tool for the ASP.NET web application framework called WebMatrix.

WebMatrix includes all of the essential tools for building, installing, and running a website in Windows for free and in a package less than 50MB in size. These tools include IIS Developer Express for building and testing ASP.NET sites and applications, SQL Server Compact Edition 4 database engine (which works with .NET-based data APIs and ASP.NET Web apps,) and the ASP.NET programming framework.

Sites can then be built from existing open-source applications such as WordPress and Drupal or Joomla, from a site template, or purely from scratch. WebMatrix then installs everything you need on your machine, lets you tweak your code, and then deploy the site to your host.

While there is a learning curve to the software, it is intended to be used by developers of any skill level, and can serve as a stepladder up to the fully featured Visual Studio.

The New Hotmail Rolling Out Now!

June 16th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – Microsoft Program Manager, Mike Schackwitz announced that Hotmail users may start seeing the new features in their inbox as early as today. The new Hotmail features include the Sweep menu, the freshly integrated Office Web Apps, huge new attachment limits up to 10 GB using SkyDrive, and the ability to create and send photo albums right from Hotmail. Microsoft expects to have all users fully upgraded by this summer.

Additionally, while most people will see all the new features at once, as soon as their cluster is upgraded, some features, like the integrated Office Web Apps and the ability to send files via SkyDrive, will initially be available only in certain countries.  For example, Office integration will first roll out to Hotmail customers in the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland first, and then to customers in other countries later this year.

Schackwitz  concluded “We’re as eager as you are for everybody to have access to the new Hotmail, and we hope that you’ll love it as much as we do, too.”

The Death of Microsoft Tablets?

May 3rd, 2010

(Vectorwire) – After recently learning of the demise of Hewlett Packard’s Slate tablet due to issues with Windows 7, Microsoft has now confirmed that production of the Courier tablet has also been killed.

“At any given time, across any of our business groups, there are new ideas being investigated, tested, and incubated. It’s in Microsoft’s DNA to continually develop and incubate new technologies to foster productivity and creativity,” said Frank Shaw, corporate vice president of communications at Microsoft.  “The ‘Courier’ project is an example of this type of effort and its technologies will be evaluated for use in future Microsoft offerings.”

Expected late this year, Courier was built in the shape of a book with two 7-inch screens, a built-in camera and Wi-Fi. The device also was said to support a variety of user inputs such as touching, handwriting and drawing.

Although this set back may end up benefiting Microsoft and Windows OS tablets in the long run, for now it seems that Microsoft is dead before ever entering the tablet wars.

Parallels Announces Availability of Desktop 5 for Mac

November 4th, 2009

(The Hosting News) – Parallels has announced the availability of the fastest, most seamless Windows-on-Mac solution ever: Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac. This is the latest version of the number 1 Mac system utility, currently enabling more than 2 million users to run Windows, Linux and other operating systems side-by-side with Mac OS X. According to performance research conducted by Crimson Consulting Group, Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac performs 22% faster than the nearest Windows-on-Mac competitor in standard productivity testing of Windows 7 64-bit on a MacBook Pro. In addition, version 5 is up to 300% faster for virtual machine operations than the previous version. For 3D and graphics performance, tested under the industry standard 3Dmark 2006 Professional test suite the new version performs up to 7 times better. Users can test this for themselves with a free trial from www.parallels.com/desktop

“As the OS battles rage between Microsoft, Apple and Linux, we provide a completely customizable solution that enables people to use the applications they need with the fastest performance available, regardless of the operating system,” said Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels. “Parallels continues to build on its proven track record of innovation, responding to our customers by providing the fastest, smartest and most powerful Windows-on-Mac experience available.”

There are more than 70 new features in Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac, many of which give users the flexibility to work in the way they want. Users can choose how much or little Windows they want to see, from running Windows in Full Screen mode where Windows completely covers the Mac user interface to the new Crystal view mode which makes Windows completely disappear. Users can even get a Mac-like experience in their Windows applications, using the intuitive Apple Trackpad Gestures technology to pinch, swipe, and rotate as they do in Mac applications.

“Ideally PC emulation should be transparent and invisible, and Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac goes a very long way towards this,” said beta tester and executive in the mining industry Nic Clift. “The thing that strikes me most about Parallels Desktop for Mac is that it is trouble-free, consistent with what I expect of Mac software, and has proved to be a remarkably convenient and easy way for me to maintain as much access to the world of Windows as I want. Parallels works as neatly with Boot Camp as it does when running seamlessly in the background, along with my everyday Mac software. If anything, version 5 has made Windows emulation even more transparent and trouble-free and unless one wants to get involved with the details of set-up it is easy to forget that it is even running.”
